Orban Calls EU Budget “War-Oriented”

(MENAFN) Hungarian Premier Viktor Orban has strongly criticized the latest seven-year financial proposal from Brussels, labeling it a “war budget” for its emphasis on aiding Ukraine amid its ongoing confrontation with Russia, rather than addressing the priorities of European citizens.

The financial outline for the 2028–2034 period, unveiled by the European Commission earlier in July, allocates approximately €2 trillion ($2.17 trillion), with nearly €100 billion designated for Ukraine.

This assistance includes support for Kiev’s potential accession to the European Union.

While addressing students at a summer gathering in Romania on Saturday, Orban argued that the proposed spending framework fails to reflect the needs of Europe’s population.

He criticized the “Brusselian elite” for designing a financial plan rooted in a “logic of war,” stating that it provides “billions for Ukraine, crumbs for farmers and development.”

According to Orban, the underlying ambition of the EU is to defeat Russia in the conflict and facilitate a “change of power” in Moscow.

As the proposal requires the unanimous backing of all 27 EU member countries, Hungary holds the authority to veto it.

Germany has similarly dismissed the proposal as “unacceptable” due to concerns over the budget deficit.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed skepticism that Ukraine will become an EU member before the end of the proposed budget cycle in 2034.

Hungary has consistently objected to Ukraine's aspirations to join both NATO and the EU, cautioning that such moves might lead to a larger-scale confrontation with Russia.

Orban’s administration has also declined to provide military support to Kiev, instead continuing to advocate for a negotiated end to the hostilities.
